Re-rendering
What happens to the previous file when you render again.
Re-rendering is clicking RENDER VIDEO a second time. There is no separate command for it.
A click on an edit you have changed starts a fresh job, and the output then points at that job and only that job. A click on an edit with nothing new to render takes you to the project's outputs without queueing anything.
Versions are versions of the edit
The Version History panel versions the edit, not the file it produced.
Choose Save Current Version to mark a state you may want back, and add a description so you can recognise it later. Restoring a version returns the edit to that state.
Restoring does not restore a video. To get a file that matches a restored version, render it again.
Exports behave the opposite way
Exports accumulate. Export History keeps up to twenty jobs for an edit, each with its own ID, time and download.
So exporting twice leaves you two packages, while rendering twice leaves you one video.
| Renders | Exports | |
|---|---|---|
| How many are kept | One | Up to twenty |
| History you can browse | None | Export History |
| Get an older one back | Not possible | Download it from the list |
| Removed by | Rendering again | Retention lapsing, or deleting it |
Duplicating instead of re-rendering
Duplicate on the output card's ⋯ menu makes a new output from the same starting point.
The duplicate has no render of its own, but it lets you keep one cut intact while you take another direction.
What re-rendering costs
Nothing. Rendering and exporting spend no credits, however many times you do either.
Credits are spent earlier, each time Prism builds the edit. Trim a cut by hand and render it again, and the balance does not move. Credits has the detail.
Rendering and exporting are paused while the account has no spendable credits.
FAQ
Do I have to re-render after every small change?
Yes, if you want the change in the file. The rendered video is a snapshot of the edit at the moment you rendered it.
Does the export I already downloaded change when I re-render?
No. Renders and exports are separate jobs with separate results. Neither one touches the other.
